NORTHAMPTON, MA - Senior David York (Andover, MA) placed seventh in the shot put and 16th in the weight throw to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's indoor track and field teams in a field of 16 teams today at the Tartan Invitational hosted by Smith College in Northampton, MA.
The men's squad finished ninth on the day with 19 points, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute took the team title with 183 points. UMass Boston's women posted a 14th-place showing with eight points and Amherst College won top honors with 136 points.
York's heave of 12.44 meters was good for seventh in the shot put, while his mark of 10:31 meters in the weight throw garnered him 16th place. Freshman John Hunt (Somersworth, NH) placed 14th in the shot put with a mark of 11.01 meters and his heave of 9.23 meters in the weight throw was good for 19th place.
Freshman Jake Kerin (Quincy, MA) led the Beacons in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.62 for a seventh-place showing, while junior Benajah Potter (Arlington, MA) was close behind at 2:04.32 to finish ninth. Freshman Henry Morales (Chelsea, MA) finished in the top 10 in three events, highlighted by a fifth-place showing in the long jump on a leap of 6.06 meters. He placed ninth in the 200 meters, clocking in at 23.97 and just missed qualifying for the finals in the 55-meter preliminaries with a time of 6.90 to finish ninth. Classmate Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, MA) was impressive with a third-place showing in the long jump on a leap of 6.22 meters. Junior Craig Knight (Pembroke, MA) led UMass Boston in the 400 meters with a time of 56.50 to stand 20th.
Senior Mariama Njie (Bakau New Town, The Gambia) led the UMass Boston women's team in th field events with a leap of 4.44 meters to take ninth place, while freshman Esther Sainterling (Somerville, MA) earned 28th place in the shot put with a throw of 8.45 meters.
Sainterling also competed on the track, placing 12th in the 55-meter preliminaries with a time of 8.08 and finished 14th in the 200 meters with a mark of 29.16. Senior Joy Risko (Bristol, RI) led the Beacons in the 400 meters with a time of 1:06.91 to finish 12th and senior Debbie Gieng (Boston, MA) took 16th in the 55-meter hurle preliminaries on a time of 10.13. Sophomore Laura Sweet (Rumney, NH) paced UMass Boston in the distance events with a time of 12:56.13 to place 19th in the 3000 meters, while Jaime Halliday (Marshfield, MA) finished 25th in the mile run with a mark of 6:25.06.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, February 13 when they head to Gorham, ME to compete in the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships.
