MEN'S AND WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT JAY CARISELLA INVITATIONAL

BOSTON, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's indoor track and field team competed at the First Annual Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University today at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA. The meet was open to Division I, II and III competitors as well as club teams.

Junior Joy Risko (Bristol, RI) led the UMass Boston women with a time of 1:07.99 to place 24th overall in the 400 meters and third among Division III runners, while placing 19th overall and fifth in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:57.26. Freshman Jacqui Brown (Lowell, MA) finished just ahead of Risko in the 800 meters with a time of 2:57.08 to claim 18th and fourth place and finished 36th and fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:12.75. Junior Celia Leclerc (Reville, France) also competed in the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 1:24.88 to place 38th and seventh. Laura Sweet was the Beacons' top finisher in the 3000 meters, posting a time of 13:15.17 to place 24th and fifth, while Samara Faustin finished 55th and 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.02 and 49th and ninth in the 55 meter preliminaries with a mark of 8.12, while junior Debbie Gieng (North Andover, MA) placed 32nd and 11th in the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 11.14. Jaime Halliday rounded out the track events for UMass Boston with a time of 6:52.76 in the mile run to place 36th and 11th. Magdala Jeannite led the Beacons in the field events with a heave of 8.96 meters in the shot put to place 27th and eighth, while Esther Sainterling finished 32nd and ninth with a throw of 8.50 meters.

Jake Kerin turned in a time of 4:55.84 to lead the UMass Boston men in the mile run with a 49th-place overall showing and ninth among Division three foes. He also finished 37th and 12th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.91. Craig Knight placed 54th and 15th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.78 and junior Fuad Conteh (Sierre Leone) was the Beacons' top sprinter with a time of 7.16 in the 55 meter preliminaries to finish 41st and 18th. He also registered a time of 26.01 in the 200 meters to place 83rd and 40th. Senior David York (Andover, MA) headed the field events for UMass Boston with a heave of 11.66 meters to place 27th and seventh in the shot put, while John Hunt registered a mark of 8.65 meters in the weight throw to place 30th and 10th.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, December 12 when it competes at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, MA.
