BOSTON, MA - Sophomore Jake Kerin (Quincy, MA) placed eighth in the 1,000M run to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's indoor track and field teams Saturday afternoon at the 2010 Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA.
Kerin crossed the finish line in 2:42.11, coming in only 11 seconds off the first place time. Freshman Xhulio Uruci (Newton, MA) was right behind him in the race, finishing 13th with a time of 2:44.71 in his collegiate debut. Uruci also ran well in the mile run, placing 22nd with a time of 4:37.36. Senior Benajah Potter (Arlington, MA) also competed in the 1000M, finishing in 16th with a time of 2:45.22.
Senior Fuad Conteh (Sierra Leone) led the way in the sprinting events for the Beacons, running the 55M dash in 6.95 seconds for a 48th place finish and the 200M dash in 25.26 seconds for 65th place. Freshman Lenford Coote also competed in both the 55M race, finishing with times of 7.79 seconds (79th place) while sophomore Jeff Laurore (Malden, MA) came in at 26.09 seconds in the 200M for a 72nd place finish. In the 400M race, sophomore Henry Morales (Chelsea, MA) was the top UMass Boston finisher in 18th place with a time of 51.58 seconds. Sophomore Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, MA) was not far behind, clocking in at 54:10 for a 38th place finish with Laurore rounding out the Beacons in the event with a 56th place finish with a 57.82 second time. Junior Willie Francois (Roslindale, MA) was the lone UMass Boston racer in the 800M event, coming in 34th place with a time of 2:31.09.
In the distance races, junior Grant Shackelford (Manteca, CA) ran the 3,000M race in 10:53.27, good for a 38th place finish while sophomore Ming Wang (King Kou, China) ran the 5,000M event in 17:53 for a 63rd place finish.
Abdul also competed in the high jump, finishing 19th overall with a leap of 6.17m.
Freshman Ariana Leao (New Bedford, MA) paced the UMass Boston women's team with a 15th place finish in the 1,000M run, coming in with a time of 3:32.12. Freshman Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) was the only Beacon female to place in multiple events, finishing 40th in the 55M with an 8.44 second time as well as a 54th place finish in the 200M dash, crossing the finish line in 29.58 seconds. Sophomore Audra Hite also ran the 200M, finishing in 67th place with a time of 31.04 seconds. Junior Tunisia Mambala (Gardena, CA) competed in the 800M race with a 22nd place finish of 3:16.63 while freshman Heather Lucas (Milton, MA) ran the 5,000M race in 19:39.75, good for a 17th place finish
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, December 11 when they head to Cambridge, MA to compete in Harvard Invitational starting at 10:00 a.m.
