MEN'S AND WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD COMPETE AT HARVARD OPEN

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Freshman Jake Kerin (Quincy, MA) finished among the top 15 Division III competitors in two events to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's indoor track and field team at the 2009 Harvard University Open Track hosted by Harvard University today at the Gordon Track and Tennis Center in Cambridge, MA. The meet was open to Division I, II and III competitors as well as club teams.

Kerin turned in a time of 4:51.68 to place 41st overall and 10th among Division III runners in the one-mile run for the Beacons, while crossing the tape in 38th place and 15th in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:08.90. Craig Knight placed 55th overall and 16th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.45, while finishing 112th and 45th in the 200 meters as UMass Boston's top finisher in the events. Senior Anthony Loui (Brookline, MA) clocked in at 8.19 in the 60-meter preliminaries to place 84th and 38th. Senior David York (Andover, MA) led the Beacons in the field events with a placing of 36th overall and 14th among Division III competitors with a throw of 9.10 meters in the weight throw, while freshman John Hunt (Somersworth, NH) finished 41st and 19th in the shot put with a heave of 9.90 meters.

Senior Joy Risko (Bristol, RI) led the UMass Boston women with a time of 1:06.11 in the 400 meters to place 29th overall and 10th among Division III runners. Sophomore Laura Sweet (Rumney, NH) finished 24th and 12th in the 3000 meters with a time of 12:34.74, while sophomore Samara Faustin (Lynn, MA) clocked in at 8.63 in the 60-meter preliminaries to place 30th and 15th and also placed 50th and 21st in the 200 meters with a mark of 29.19. Freshman Jacqui Brown (Lowell, MA) finished 40th and 18th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:53.35 and senior Debbie Gieng (Boston, MA) registered a 38th-place showing overall and 18th among Division III runners in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 11.16. Junior Jaime Halliday (Marshfield, MA) placed 58th and 24th in the one-mile run with a time of 6:43.43. Freshman Esther Sainterling (Somerville, MA) led the Beacons' women in the field events with a throw of 8.18 meters in the shot put to place 39th and 20th.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, January 16 when it competes at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA.
