CAESAR, CASADO LEAD MEN'S & WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD AT LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

WESTFIELD, MA - Senior Glenny Casado (Methuen, MA) placed in the top five among Little East Conference competitors in three different events and won the 100 meters, while freshman Toren Caesar (Darrell Spring, Tobago) finished second in the 800 meters to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's outdoor track and field teams at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships hosted by Westfield State College today in Westfield, MA. The meet was open to all Little East Conference and Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference members that sponsor track & field. The Beacons' men finished sixth among LEC squads with 32 points and 10th in the Alliance standings with 15 points, while the women finished sixth with 24 points and 11th with six. University of Southern Maine won the team title for both the LEC and Alliance meet with 261 and 184.50 points, respectively. The USM women won the LEC title with 183 points, while the women of Westfield State College took the Alliance's top spot with 162.50 points. Casado's time of 13.15 in the 100 meters was the fastest among LEC runners and placed her fifth in the Alliance meet to give her All-Little East Conference and Alliance status. She also placed fourth and ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.64 and fifth and 10th in the long jump with a leap of 4.45 meters. Senior Mariama Njie (Bakau New Town, The Gambia) was right behind Casado in the long jump with a mark of 4.44 meters to place sixth and 11th in the LEC and Alliance standings, respectively. Junior Joy Risko (Bristol, RI) clocked in at 1:07.55 to finish sixth and 13th in the 400 meters, while sophomore Lauren Brown (Dorchester, MA) ran a time of 1:15.51 to place 10th and 21st. Senior Jennifer Wong (Fremont, CA) finished sixth among LEC runners in the 400 hurdles and 12th in the Alliance with a time of 1:16.63. Junior Jessica Sams (Bellingham, MA) led in the field events for the UMB women, finishing eighth and 13th in the shot put with a heave of 9.58 meters and registered a throw of 20.60 meters in the discus to place 14th and 24th. Caesar nearly pulled off the double championship in the 800 meters. He won the indoor title and posted a time of 1:55.98 to finish second in both the LEC and Alliance standings to receive All-Little East and Alliance status, while senior Michael Murphy (Worcester, MA) placed seventh and 12th in the event with a mark of 2:02.69. Senior Emile Pierre-Louis (Archaie, Haiti) led the UMass Boston sprinters with a third place showing in the 200 meters with a time of 22.73, which was good for eighth in the alliance to grant him All-Little East Conference and Alliance honors, while senior Grahm Power (Waterford, Ireland) attained All-Alliance status in the 5,000 meters with a seventh place finish on a time of 16:44.00, which was good for fourth among LEC harriers. Sophomore Patrick Day (Quincy, MA) clocked in at 37:29.86 in the 10,000 meters to place eighth and 16th, while senior Ryan Norton (Walpole, MA) led the Beacons in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 12th and 17th-place showing on a time of 11:11.31. Junior David York (Andover, MA) led the men in the field events, placing ninth and 16th in the shot put with a heave of 11.51 meters, while registering a throw of 29.09 meters in the discus to place 10th and 20th. Sophomore T. Elliot Barraford (Barnstead, NH) also performed well with a throw of 38.11 meters to place eighth and 25th in the javelin. UMass Boston will be in action again on Friday, May 1 in Springfield, MA at the New England Division III Regional Championships, hosted by Springfield College at 4:00 p.m. |
