PAXTON, MA -Freshman Heather Lucas (Milford, MA) and sophomore Jake Kerin (Quincy) led the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's cross country teams today at the 2010 Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships at Moore Park in Paxton, MA.
Lucas was the top finisher for the Beacons' women, coming in at 21:03 in the five-kilometer run, finishing 20th in the LEC Championship and 29th overall. Paige Mills of the Keene State College took the top spot on the women's side in both races with a mark of 18:10 to help lead Keene to a team score of 18 which was enough to lift the Owls to the LEC title. Keene also pulled out the New England Alliance championship with 19 total points in the meet.
Sophomore Tunisia Mambala (Los Angeles, CA) was the only other UMass Boston competitor in the women's race, clocking in at 28:34 for a 61st place finish in the LEC championship and 134th place finish overall.
Kerin paced the UMass Boston men with a 60th-place finish in the LEC race and 106th in the NE Alliance portion by clocking in at 31:09 to lead the Beacons' men's squad. Eric Macknight of Keene State College was the top finisher in the Little East Conference finishing crossing the finish at 26:07 to lead the Owls to a men's and women's conference sweep with 25 total points while Alex Gomes of Salem State was the top finisher in the combined race, coming in at 25:59. Keene State took home the NE Alliance crown as well with 36 total points. The Beacons men's team finished in sixth place in the LEC meet and 13th overall.
Sophomore Ming Wang (Ying Kou, China) was the next UMass Boston male to cross the finish line coming in at 69th place in the conference meet and 129th overall with a time of 32:58. Sophomore Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, MA) finished the race in 32:38 to place 69th in the LEC and 133rd overall. Sophomore Christopher Chapman (Brockton, MA) clocked in at 36:28 for a 72nd/145th place finish while sophomore Henry Morales rounded out the Beacons squad with a time of 36:53, good for 73rd/146th place in the meet.
Today's meet was the final race of the 2010 season for the UMass Boston men and women's cross country squads.
