Mark Matanes '71 to Be Inducted into UMB Athletics Hall of Fame
BOSTON, Mass.—The University of Massachusetts Boston Department of Athletics has announced that former Boston State College pitcher Mark Matanes ’71 will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2012 induction class.
Perhaps one of the greatest hurlers in Boston State history, Matanes will be one of 10 honorees who will be enshrined this October in the university’s annual ceremony, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.
A four-year letter winner with the Warriors, Matanes was the go-to ace in the Boston State bullpen. Matanes, who ended his college career as one of the most accomplished pitchers in program history, held program records in career wins, total innings pitched, strikeouts and appearances.
During his four seasons he amassed a career record of 16-4 with a 2.85 earned run average. His standout play on the hill earned him All-New England and Most Valuable Player honors in 1969. Matanes helped the program to back-to-back New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) playoff appearances his junior and senior seasons, while serving as a co-captain in his final season with the Warriors.
Following his graduation from Boston State, Matanes went on to earn his master’s degree from Boston University. He also earned his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Boston College while teaching adaptive physical education to special needs children. He turned his education into a calling, working and coordinating Massachusetts Special Olympics programs for the Boston Public Schools. While doing all of that, Matanes also found time for the game he loved serving as a coach for the South Boston Babe Ruth Baseball League.
After dedicating his life to the city of Boston as a teacher and coach, Matanes was recalled to active duty in 2005 with the United State Navy. After returning home, Matanes would receive perhaps one of the biggest honors of his life, as he was named a 2008 selection for the New England Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame.
Currently, Matanes serves as the State Commissioner of the Eastern Massachusetts Babe Ruth Baseball. He and his wife Rosemary have two children, Sara and Mark.
