LEESBURG, Fla. – With a combined 13 hits and at least one run scored in every inning but one, baseball (3-0) cruised to their third straight win of the 2012 season as they defeated Becker College (1-3) by the final score of 11-0 in seven innings of play Monday afternoon at Lake Sumter Community College.
The Beacons third straight victory truly one of their most dominating performances yet as they took control of the game early and never once looked back. After the first two innings UMass Boston jumped out to a solid six run lead, which was the result of a two RBI single in the first by Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) and a grand slam by freshman Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) in the second.
Also fueling the Beacons victory was another standout performance on the hill, with Tom Cole (Mattapoisett, Mass.) leading the UMass Boston bullpen in his first start of the year. In his five innings of work, Cole allowed just one hit and two walks, while also retiring six batters to notch his first win of the season. Michael Boughton (New Britain, Conn.) closed out the final two frames as he allowed just two hits, while also tallying a pair of strikeouts.
At the plate a total of three Beacons finished with two hits as Consiglio went 2-for-4, followed by Jack DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) who went 2-for-3 and Dominic Morbidelli (Oakland, Calif.) who went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Defensively the Beacons also turned a combined three double plays with two of those coming in the final two innings of the game.
After jumping out to a 6-0 lead after two, the Beacons tacked on one run over the middle three innings before scoring two more in the top of the seventh to secure the 11-0 victory.
Baseball returns to action on Wednesday when they face McDaniel College at 4 p.m.
