WALTHAM, Mass. – Led by Pedro Acevedo's team-best six hits, three RBI and two runs scored respectively the Rams of Framingham State University (7-7) swept baseball by the finals of 5-0 and 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Yetten Field in a non-conference doubleheader.
Along with Acevedo Chris Cole also had a strong day at the plate for the Rams as he combined for four hits and a run scored. On the hill, Framingham got everything they needed from Matthew DiCato in game one and Ryan Bowen in game two. The two pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and allowed 10 hits and only one run scored respectively.
The Beacons offense which had chances throughout Saturday's doubleheader totaled 11 hits in Saturday's doubleheader. With numerous runners on base the Beacons were unable to drive home key runs throughout both contests, which allowed the Rams to get what they needed to pull out the back-to-back victories.
In the opener, UMass saw sophomore third baseman Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.) post two of the Beacons six hits. On the hill righty Daniel Heefner (Tracy, Calif.) went six complete innings and allowed six hits on the day.
Framingham State got on the board in the second inning following an RBI double from Anthony Iafallo. They then tacked on four more runs through the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the 5-0 victory.
Game two saw the Beacons take an early 1-0 on Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) RBI single. That lead would hold-up until the top of the fourth when the Rams got two runs across. Despite the two runs pitcher Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, Mass.) was solid for all seven innings as he struckout four batters. Also having a strong showing at the plate was Collin Keefer (Charlotte, N.C.) who went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
The Beacons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State University for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game. The contest will mark the first of five road games that UMass has scheduled for next week.
