Baseball Drops Doubleheader at No. 28 Amherst in Regular Season Finale

AMHERST, Mass. – Baseball saw its three-game win-streak come to an end as they were handed a pair of losses by 28th ranked Amherst College Sunday afternoon in the final games of the 2014 regular season for both teams.

A late addition to the Beacons schedule, the host Jeffs defeated the Beacons 7-3 in game one and 13-5 in game two.  With the losses UMass Boston closes out the regular season with a 17-22 record.  Amherst heads into their conference tournament with a record of 28-7.  The Beacons will begin Little East Conference tournament play on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Eastern Connecticut State University.

In the opener Amherst used a five-run second inning to earn the victory, while in game two the Jeffs scored five runs in the second and six in the fourth to finish off the sweep of the Beacons.

Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) led the Beacons in game one with a pair of RBI, while in game two Chris Adams (Whitman, Mass.) ripped a solo home run in the fourth to score the Beacons first run of the day.

GAME ONE – UMass Boston 3, Amherst College 7

Game one, saw the Jeffs score six of their seven runs in the first two innings, while the Beacons managed their three runs in the third and fourth innings respectively.  Mantoni drove in two of the runs on a RBI double to right center in the fourth.

Anthony Gomes-Sirianni (San Francisco, Calif.) and Bryan Failla (Torrington, Conn.) also recorded doubles in the loss, while Jose Pena (Boston, Mass.) drove in the first run of the game in the third inning.

GAME TWO – UMass Boston 5, Amherst College 13

Just like the opener, the Jeffs scored their first six runs in the opening two innings to take control of the contest early.  They would then put-up six in the fourth, while allowing just one Beacons run through the first six innings.

UMass Boston had their biggest inning of the day in the seventh when the plated three runs to make it 12-4.  Unfortunately, Amherst scored one run in the bottom of the inning, to push their lead back to nine.  The Beacons final run came in the top of the ninth before falling to the Jeffs.

Mantoni continued his strong day as the freshman went 3-for-3.  Adams' solo shot in the fourth marked his second of the season.  Jason Cholish (Exton, Pa.) drove in two of the Beacons run on a double in the seventh.
