BOSTON, Mass. – After their return to the NCAA Division III Regional tournament last season, Beacons baseball has high aspirations for the 2017 campaign, with the team and individual players earning national preseason attention.
As a team, the Beacons are currently ranked 39th in Division III on the Collegiate Baseball Top-40 Preseason Poll. They have also received votes (48) on the D3Baseball.com Top-25 poll, which has them sitting 28th in the country.
In total the Beacons had four players featured in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Players to Watch for in 2017 list. Sophomore JT Morin (Wilton, Conn.) was named one of the top lefthanders in the country, while newcomer and Division I transfer Matt Tulley (Lowell, Mass.) is ranked amongst the top right-handers. Tulley was also named a top draft prospect by Baseball America, as he looks to add to an already deep Beacons pitching staff. All-Region honorees Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) and Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) were also recognized as one of the top shortstops and multi-position players respectively.
Last season, the Beacons became the first program in UMass Boston history to earn an At-Large bid to the NCA Tournament. The Beacons would also register their second 30+ win season in program history, and won their first-ever Little East Conference Regular Season title.
The Beacons will begin their 2017 campaign on March 4 when they host Lasell College at 12 p.m. at Monan Park.
