AUBURNDALE, FL - The No. 15 University of Massachusetts baseball team notched its first win of the 2011 campaign, defeating Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 15-7, Monday morning at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL. With the win, the Beacons improve to 1-3 on the year while the loss drops the Trailblazers to 2-3 overall.
Over the first three innings of play, UMass Boston jumped ahead to a commanding 11-2 lead, fueled by five runs in the second and four in the third innings to help them coast to the victory. Senior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) belted a two-run HR in the second while junior right fielder Jose Roman Santos (Tenares, DR) added a two-run jack in the third to pace the offensive onslaught. The Beacons would tack on four more runs in the eighth inning to secure the 15-7 win, with RBI's coming from sophomore left fielder Nick Grassetti (Agawam, MA), junior Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) and sophomore shortstop Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT).
On the mound, sophomore right-handed pitcher Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, FL) earned the win tossing five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Dziok (Southampton, MA) looked solid out of the pen, hurling a scoreless ninth inning in relief for UMass Boston.
The Beacons are back in action tomorrow night when they face off against No. 18 SUNY Cortland at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park. Both teams appeared in the 2010 NCAA Division III College Baseball World Series.
