NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Boston's baseball team split on the road vs. UMass Dartmouth, 10-0 and 17-9, in the 2011 Little East Conference opener for both schools at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon.
Leading 3-0 in the first game, UMass Boston used a seven-run seventh inning to propel them to victory. After senior infielder Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH/Northfield Mt. Herman HS) plated the first run of the inning for the Beacons, junior infielders Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, MA/East Boston HS) and Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA/Davis Prouty HS) batted in two runs each, singling with the bases loaded, putting UMass Boston up 10-0 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Corsairs failed to score during their at-bats, forcing the game to be ended due to the 10-run rule. Beacons junior pitcher James Dalton (2-2; Apopka, FL/Apopka HS) threw seven scoreless innings, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts. Corsairs' senior pitcher Brian Pedrotti (1-4; Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up eight runs with a strikeout.
During the second game, tied 3-3 in the bottom of the third, the Corsairs broke the game open with a six-run outburst. After RBI singles from freshman outfielder Shane Leupold (Newington, CT/Newington HS) and senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS), senior catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) blasted a two-out grand slam, giving the Corsairs a 9-3 lead. The Beacons pulled within four runs after the fourth and seventh inning, but a four-run spurt by the Corsairs in the eighth inning put the game away for good, resulting in the 17-9 victory for UMD. Corsairs' senior pitcher Shane Campbell (2-1; Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) pitched six innings, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits with a strikeout. Junior pitcher Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) pitched a scoreless final three innings, earning his third save for UMD. Beacons sophomore pitcher Daniel Heefner (1-2; Tracy, CA/Tracy HS) gave up nine runs on eight hits in only 2.2 innings of work. "We had guys on base in the first game but we couldn't score," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "[UMass Boston] went to the World Series last year, so when you have a chance to score, you have got to score. In the second game, our big guys swung the bats, which they didn't in the first game. Starting pitching-wise we did a good job in both games. I got the key in the bullpen, Pat Lavey, he's a stud and I was counting the outs to get to him."
Senior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA/Newton North HS) and Reinfurt would both homer for the Beacons in the loss.
The Corsairs are now 7-8 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the split, while the Beacons are now 6-10 and 1-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Babson Monday. UMass Boston will host Framingham State Tuesday.
