WALTHAM, MA - Junior centerfielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) collected three hits and scored two runs while junior starting pitcher James Dalton (Apopka, FL) tossed 7.1 strong innings to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston past No. 9 Eastern Connecticut State University, 8-3, in game one of a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Yetten Field in Waltham, MA. The win for the Beacons snapped the Warriors nine-game winning streak and while also handing them their first conference loss of the 2011 campaign. Eastern Connecticut rebounded with a strong game two pitching performance from senior Jim Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) to take an 8-1 decision and salvage the spilt. UMass Boston now stands at 9-14 overall and 4-3 in the LEC while Eastern boasts a 22-4 record, 6-1 in LEC play.
In game one, the Beacons got on the board early with a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH), plating McCormack who was on-base via a single to right. Senior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) would add to the lead with a two-RBI single up the middle in the third inning to drive in McCormack and junior third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA) to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
In the fourth inning, sophomore shortstop Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT) belted a two-RBI single to make it 5-0 in favor of the Beacons and eventually came around to score to make it a 6-0 game. UMass Boston would add another run on an RBI single by junior designated hitter Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, MA) to push its lead to 7-0. Meanwhile, Dalton held the Warriors bats at bay, surrendering only five singles over the first six innings.
The Warriors would get on the board in the seventh, plating an unearned run on an RBI single by senior left fielder Robert Perry (Manchester, CT) to make it 7-1 but the Beacons would get it right back when freshman catcher Taylor Kapulka (Worcester, MA) came across to score the eighth UMass Boston run and make it 8-1.
Eastern Connecticut would knock Dalton out of the game in the seventh after plating two runs to cut the Beacons lead to 8-3. Junior catcher Steve Cammuso (Rutland, MA) led off the frame with a walk and came around to score on an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Joe Balowski (Berlin, CT). Balowski would advance to third on the throw to the plate and score the third Warrior run on an RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Danny O'Connell (Braintree, MA), ending Dalton's outing. Sophomore right-hander Daniel Heefner (Tracy, CA) came on in relief to record the final five outs of the game to preserve the 8-3 UMass Boston victory.
With the win, Dalton improves to 4-2 on the season and has now won his last four decisions. The southpaw allowed three runs (two earned) while scattering eight hits to go along with seven strikeouts. Junior starting pitcher Jim Dimon (Seymour, CT) suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings of work to fall to 4-1 on the year.
Game two was a close contest until the Warriors broke it open with three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to pull away from the 8-1 win.
With the game knotted at 1-1 in the seventh, senior catcher Chris Cannata (Southington, CT) led off the frame with a walk and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run for the Warriors on an RBI single to centerfield by senior centerfielder Shane Kingsley (Beacon Falls, CT). The run would prove to be the game-winner as Schult and company were able to hold the Beacons scoreless over the final three frames.
Eastern Connecticut would add on to its lead with three runs in the eighth inning, two coming as a result of UMass Boston miscues as both O'Connell and Canata notched RBI's in the frame. The Warriors would then add some insurance in the ninth with three more runs to help them take a commanding 8-1 lead. Senior Tyler Turgeon (Norwich, CT) connected on a two-RBI double to left and came around to score on an RBI triple by Balowski to cap the game's scoring.
The Warriors got on the board first with a run in the third inning on an RBI double by Schult to drive home Perry before UMass Boston tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by Kapulka, platting Walsh who reached via a walk.
Schult improves to 5-1, scattering four hits while striking out 10 in the win. Sophomore Mike Reimer (Ellington, CT) pitched a scoreless ninth to close the door for the Warriors. For UMass Boston, sophomore Tom Cole (Mattapoisett, MA) pitched well in defeat, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. He falls to 2-3 on the year.
The Beacons will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 19 when they head to Gorham, ME for a 3:30 p.m. contest vs. LEC foe Southern Maine while Eastern Connecticut is back in action the same day for a 4:00 p.m. LEC contest in Danbury, CT vs. Western CT State.
