NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Little East Conference executive office has named men's basketball player Vinny DeLucia (Miami, Fla.) and freshman women's basketball player Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) this week's player and rookie of the week respectively.
For DeLucia, Monday's announcement marks the first weekly honor for the reigning Little East Conference and D3Hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year. Murphy nabbed her fifth straight and sixth overall LEC Rookie of the Week honor, after leading UMB to a 2-0 week.
DeLucia averaged a team-best 18.3 points, 3.0 assists, and 5.0 steals per game. In the three game week for the Beacons, the Florida native hit double-figures and recorded a season-high 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting in Saturday's loss to Keene State College. Against the Owls, DeLucia also managed four assists and two steals in a team-leading 38 minutes of playing time. At the free throw line he was a perfect 6-for-6 and also dropped in a pair of 3-pointers.
In the Beacons final non-conference road game at Tufts University, the sophomore recorded a team-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while on Tuesday he posted 15 points as he went 5-for-15 against UMass Dartmouth. Against the Corsairs, DeLucia also managed a career-best eight steals.
Murphy's dominance of the Rookie of the Week honor this season continued after she recorded 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds to help the Beacons to huge wins over UMass Dartmouth and Keene State. From the field she shot 45% on 9-of-20 shooting. In Tuesday's come-from-behind win over Dartmouth, Murphy recorded 10 points and managed nine rebounds. On Saturday, she led the Beacons to their first-ever regular season sweep of the Owls as she recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, and a career-best six blocks.
