Corsairs Push Past Men’s Basketball In Conference Play

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – A 16-2 run midway would the second half would prove to be the deciding factor to lead the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth to an 81-71 win over men's basketball Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center in a Little East Conference contest.

Tuesday's loss drops the Beacons record to 6-16 overall, 0-11 in the Little East.  For the host Corsairs they improved to 14-8, 7-4 in the conference following the come-from-behind victory.

The Beacons went into the halftime break leading on the scoreboard by four points.  They would then maintain their lead over their intra-state rival through the first 10 minutes of the second, until Jacek Louisville tied the game at 51-51 on a jumper.  That basket would spark the Corsair's go-ahead run which saw them take 58-51 lead before Sam Freeman (Boston, Mass.) could end the Beacons scoring drought.

After another UMass Dartmouth 3-pointer, junior guard Quadry Allen (White Castle, La.) drained the next five points for the Beacons to cut the Corsairs lead to three (58-61) with 5:38 left in contest.  However five straight points from UMass Dartmouth pushed their lead back to eight, but that did not last as Allen converted an and-1 and along with a Freeman lay-up UMass Boston found them selves trailing by just three with 3:45 left.

Unfortunately at 15-8 over the last three plus minutes would keep the rallying Beacons at bay as the Corsairs held on to take the conference win.

On the night, Allen finished second on the team with 14 points, eight of which came in the second half.  Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all players with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, 2-for-8 from behind the arc and 3-for-4 at the line.

Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) and Omar Benabicha (Saugus, Mass.) each grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, with Benabicha finishing with 13 points, followed by Joseph who had 12.  On the glass the Beacons held a 44-40 advantage in rebounds.

For the Corsairs Laga dropped in 18 points to lead his team, while Tucker Bouchard and Akanni combined for 32 points respectively.  Wale Abraham finished one point shy of a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while also finishing with nine points.

The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Plymouth State University at 3 p.m.
