MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT WESTERN CONNECTICUT, 71-50

DANBURY, CT - Freshman forward Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) scored the team's first 12 points and finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team over Little East Conference rival University of Massachusetts Boston, 71-50, Saturday afternoon at the O'Neill Center on the campus of Western Connecticut State University.
Robinson carried the offensive load single-handedly for the Colonials to open the game. The Beacons took a 9-8 lead at the 14:45 mark, but Robinson scored on WestConn's next two possessions to give the Colonials a 12-9 advantage that they never relinquished. WestConn went into the locker room at intermission with a 36-28 lead.
At the 14:05 mark of the second half, senior guard A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) hit a jumper to trim the WestConn lead to seven, 45-38, for UMass Boston. The Colonials then went on a 16-point run to take a commanding 61-38 lead with 8:48 remaining in the game. WestConn coasted to a 71-50 final margin of victory. For the game, WestConn shot 57% from three-point range and outrebounded the Beacons 45-35.
For UMass Boston, junior forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) led the way with 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Titus had 11 points and three assists.
For WestConn, also netting double figures in points were freshman center Leroy Mayers (Bronx, NY) and senior guard Dewayne Dickens (Danbury, CT), both with 10 points. Robinson also led the Colonials in rebounding with eight, followed by Mayers with seven.
With the victory WestConn moves to 5-5 on the season, 1-2 in the Little East Conference, while the Beacons falls to 2-10, 0-3 in the LEC.
Both teams will be back in LEC action on Tuesday, January 13 when UMass Boston travels to Plymouth, NH to take on Plymouth State University at 7:30 p.m. while the Colonials' will travel to Keene State for a 7:30 p.m. game.
