BOSTON, MA - Senior guard Jason O'Keefe (Everett, MA) scored a game-high 15 points and the Plymouth State University men's basketball team's defense held host University of Massachusetts Boston to just 34.7 % (17-49) shooting as the visitors came away with a 60-41 victory this evening in a Little East Conference tilt at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Panthers improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in LEC play, while the Beacons fall to 3-11 and 1-3.
UMass Boston junior forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) scored the game's first four points to give the Beacons a 4-0 lead with 17:58 to play in the opening half, but it would be their least lead of the night as Plymouth State responded with seven straight points, including the final five from O'Keefe, to take a 7-4 margin with 14:06 showing in the first half. Junior guard Mo Johnson (Portland, OR) canned a three-pointer with 13:13 left in the first half to pull UMass Boston even at 7-7, but the Panthers roared ahead with a 16-4 run, fueled by four three-pointers, to take a 23-11 advantage with 7:19 to go in the stanza. The Beacons scored the next eight points to cut the deficit to 23-19 with 2:50 to play in the first half, before Plymouth State scored the final four points of the half to take a 29-21 lead into the break.
Joseph completed a three-point play with a free throw to pull UMass Boston to within 29-24 just 16 seconds into the second session, but the Panthers put together a 12-2 stretch, paced by eight points from junior forward Tom Dowd (Portsmouth, NH), to take a 41-26 bulge with 15:32 remaining in the contest. The Beacons would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Plymouth State maintained a 52-39 lead with 3:31 left in the game. The Panthers scored eight of the final 10 points to secure the win in a second half that saw them hold UMass Boston to just 26.9% (7-26) from the field.
O'Keefe added three assists and a steal to his line for Plymouth State, while Dowd finished with 12 points on 6-11 from the floor in addition to seven rebounds, two steals and a block. Junior guard Ryan Lambert (Derry, NH) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Joseph led the Beacons with 13 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks, while sophomore guard Justin Favors (Mableton, GA) contributed with 11 points and four boards off the bench.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Thursday, January 14 when it heads to Bridgewater, MA to take on Bridgewater State College at 7:30 p.m., while the Panthers host LEC rival Rhode Island College on January 16 at 3:00 p.m.
