DANBURY, CT (Jan. 15) -- Five different players scored in double figures as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Little East Conference rival UMass Boston 87-72 Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Sophomore Ryan Pelletier (Wolcott, CT) led the Colonials with 16 points, while also pulling down five rebounds and handing out five assists. Also scoring in double figures for WestConn were junior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) with 15 points, freshman Russell Payton (Stratford, CT) with 12 points, and senior Will Jarrett (Hartford, CT) and junior Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) who each scored 11. Jarrett led the Colonials on the boards with nine rebounds.
For UMass Boston, sophomore Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA) led all scorers with 18 points, followed by senior Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) with 16, junior Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy) with 14, and junior Geoffrey Ebbs (Hingham, MA) with 11 points. Joseph recorded a double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds for the Beacons.
UMass Boston took control early, running out to a 10-4 lead after the game's first seven minutes. WestConn fought back with a 17-4 run, capped by a Robinson 3-pointer, and never looked back. The Colonials increased the lead to 15 points, 37-22, after a Pelletier three with just over four minutes remaining in the half, and went into the locker room at intermission with a 19-point lead, 48-29.
WestConn scored in the first minute of play in the second half on two Jarrett free throws, and extended the lead to 22 after a Brooks three gave the Colonials a 53-31 lead. With 13 minutes remaining, WestConn took its largest lead of the game, 25 points, after a Jarrett free throw pushed the margin to 64-29. UMass Boston chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to 14 points after a Jenkins layup with five minutes remaining, but the Colonials quickly pushed the lead back to 20 points and cruised to an 87-72 victory.
For the game, WestConn held a 40-37 advantage in rebounds, and a 20-15 edge in assists. The Colonials shot 48.3% from the floor and 82.6% from the free-throw line, compared to 44.1% and only 41.7% for UMass Boston.
With the win, WestConn improves to 13-2 on the season and 4-1 in the Little East Conference. UMass Boston falls to 6-9 and remains winless at 0-5 in the LEC. Both teams will be in action again on Tuesday, January 18th, when the Colonials travels to play LEC rival Rhode Island College while UMB heads to UMass Dartmouth. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in both contests.
