MEN'S BASKETBALL BEATEN AT RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE, 79-53

PROVIDENCE, RI -- Rhode Island College senior guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) led four Anchormen in double figures with 13 points as RIC cruised to a 24-point, 79-53, win over University of Massachusetts Boston in Little East Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center.

Rhode Island College wins for the third straight game -- seventh in its past eight contests -- to raise its record to 12-4 overall and keep pace with UMass Dartmouth for the top spot in the LEC with a 6-1 mark. The Beacons fall to 2-15 overall and 0-7 in league play. RIC wins the season series with the Beacons.

The Anchormen opened the game with back-to-back buckets by senior center Wil Lyons (Warwick, RI) to take a 4-0 lead just 51 seconds in. The visitors battled back to take a 13-11 lead on a layup and jumper by sophomore forward Anthony Brewster (Boston, MA) at 14:14. The Beacons built a five-point advantage, 23-18, at 10:50 before the Anchormen erupted for a 25-5 run to close out the half.

Senior guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) scored 11 points, and nailed three trifectas, with Stewart chipping in with two treys of his own, over the final 10:50 to help lead RIC to a 15-point, 43-28, halftime lead.

The Anchormen put the game out of reach early in the second half, holding UMass Boston scoreless over the first 4:20 seconds of action. RIC scored the first five points of the final stanza to build a 20-point lead, 48-28, capped by a senior forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) free throw.

Rhode Island College would never let its lead dip below 18 points the rest of the game. Johnson gave the Anchormen a game-high 32-point advantage, 72-40, with 7:41 remaining.

Every player on the home roster scored at least a point in the win. Johnson and Hill finished with 11 points, while sophomore guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI) logged 10 points and five assists. Lyons registered nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.

UMass Boston sophomore forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards in a losing effort. Brewster finished with 11 points.

The Anchormen shot 50 percent (32-for-64) from the field, 44 percent (10-for-23) from downtown and turned the ball over a season-low nine times. The Beacons shot just 33 percent (21-for-63) from the floor and 13 percent (2-for-15) from three-point land.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue the Little East Conference circuit on Tuesday, Jan. 27 when the Anchormen square off against Western Connecticut, while the Beacons host Little East Conference foe University of Massachsuetts Dartmouth on January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center.
