MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATED AT MIT, 87-53

CAMBRIDGE, MA - MIT set an Institute record with 17 three-point field goals and the Engineers ran away from the University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball team, 87-53, on Monday in Rockwell Cage. MIT dominated the boards and received offensive contributions from the entire roster to secure its eighth win in nine games while improving to 8-0 at home. Senior Jimmy Bartolotta was white hot at the start, dropping in 23 points during the first 11 minutes of the game as MIT (15-5) powered in front, 30-13. Bartolotta closed with a game-high 34 points in 29 minutes of work, while adding nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. He also finished 8-of-15 from three-point range, tying Andrew Tsai `04 for the single-game program record for made three's. While Bartolotta topped 30 for the 10th time this season, rookie Jamie Karraker added 20 points after hitting 5-of-9 from deep. The Engineers finished the game 17-of-35 from behind the arc with six different players striking from distance. UMass Boston (3-17) was paced by junior forward Ernst Jean (Malden, MA), who finished with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while chipping in two assists and two steals. The Beacons outscored the Engineers in the paint, 34-24, but were out-rebounded, 42-29. Sophomore forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. In addition to Karraker, rookies Billy Bender and Arni Lehto also enjoyed a solid evening of work. Lehto set a career-high with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Bender totaled nine rebounds, five points, four assists, and a game-best three steals. Point guards Bradley Gampel and Patrick Sissman combined for 13 assists, while the Cardinal and Gray finished with 26 assists on 29 field goals as a team. Monday's win marked MIT's second victory in the all-time series against UMass Boston and the first since 1963.
