MEN'S BASKETBALL BEATEN BY WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 88-63

BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) posted a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 88-63, this afternoon in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 3-18 overall and 1-9 in LEC play, while the Colonials improve to 11-8 and 5-5.
UMass Boston sophomore forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) opened the game with a thunderous dunk off the opening tip to give the home team a 2-0 lead, but it would be the last lead it would enjoy as Western Connecticut State outscored the Beacons, 22-11, over the next seven minutes of play, fueled by six points each from freshman guard Daquan Brooks (Bristol, CT), senior guard Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, CT) and sophomore forward David Addy (Manchester, CT), to take a 22-13 lead with 13 minutes to go in the first half. UMass Boston netted five unanswered points, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Anthony Brewster (Boston, MA/John D. O'Bryant), to pull to within 22-18 with 11:51 showing on the first half clock and stayed within 25-20 at the 10:05 mark, but the Colonials went on a torrid 23-4 stretch to take a 48-24 advantage with 1:47 remaining in the first stanza, led by eight points from Brooks. Western Connecticut State took a 51-28 lead into the intermission.
Jennings drained a three-pointer to open the second half and give the Colonials a 54-28 lead. Western Connecticut later maintained a 58-34 advantage with 16:48 left in the game, but the Beacons chipped away with a 13-4 stretch over the next seven-plus minutes to cut the margin to 62-47 with 9:02 showing in the contest, paced by seven points from freshman guard Chris Milton (Milton, MA). UMass Boston stayed within 71-53 with 6:23 to play, but the Colonials went on a 17-7 run, led by six points from sophomore forward John Phillips (Hartford, CT), to take their largest lead of the day at 88-60 with 2:02 remaining in the contest.
Robinson was 3-6 from the floor and 11-13 from the line and added three assists, a steal and a block for Western Connecticut State, while Brooks finished with 17 points on 6-11 from the field and dished for five assists and made a steal. Phillips ended the afternoon with 10 points on 5-9 shooting in 13 minutes off the bench and added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Joseph led the Beacons with 15 points, eight rebounds, two blocks in addition to an assist, while senior point guard A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) dropped in 15 points, dished for a game-high six assists and grabbed four boards. Milton finished his day with 14 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, February 10 when it hosts University of Southern Maine in a conference tilt at 7:30 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Colonials host Eastern Connecticut State University on the same night at 7:30 p.m.
