NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team scored 25 of the game's first 30 points, jumped out to a 47-25 halftime lead and went on to defeat visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 92-60, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
Senior forward Brandon Shelton (Cambridge, MA) opened the game with a lay-up, and sophomore center Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA) followed with a three-point play. Junior forward Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, MA) and sophomore guard Alex Klepadlo (Bernardston, MA) each contributed a pair of three-pointers during a 16-2 run that made it 21-4, and lay-ups by sophomore guard Paul Rose (Boston, MA) and Greene capped the rally as UMass Dartmouth opened a 20-point lead midway through the first half.
The Beacons battled back, cutting the deficit to 27-13 with 6:45 left in the first half on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Michael Mitchell (Boston, MA). The Corsairs built a 26-point lead before UMass Boston came back and scored the final four points of the first half. The Beacons never got closer than 21 points in the second half, and UMass Dartmouth led by 39 points, 80-41, with 8:41 remaining.
Stephens led all scorers with 21 points, Greene added, and Shelton contributed 12. Mitchell had 11 points to lead the Beacons. Shelton and UMass Boston freshman forward Kristi Gjikondi (Fier, Albania) each grabbed eight rebounds, as the Corsairs out rebounded the Beacons, 38-32. UMass Dartmouth made 60.7 per cent of their shots from the field, while UMass Boston converted 37.5 per cent, and the Corsairs had 28 assists to go with 37 field goals.
The Corsairs improved to 16-6 and 8-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Beacons dropped to 4-18 and 2-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. UMass Boston will travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday, February 13 for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
