QUINCY, MA - Junior guard Mo Johnson (Portland, OR) netted a team-high 19 points and senior forward Ernst Jean (Malden, MA) posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball team over host Eastern Nazarene College, 86-72, today in Quincy, MA. The Beacons even their record at 1-1 on the year, while the Lions fall to 0-3.
UMass Boston shot a torrid 64.3% (36-56) from the floor, including 6-14 from three-point territory, while holding Eastern Nazarene to 40.4% (21-52) shooting.
The Beacons raced out to a 17-4 advantage, but the Lions closed the gap to within four points, before UMass Boston took a 43-34 halftime lead.
The Beacons led by double-digits for most of the second half, fueled by a strong defensive effort. Eastern Nazarene later took advantage of UMass Boston's turnovers to close to within 63-53 with 10:17 left in the game, but the Beacons knocked down a pair of threes and a two-pointer to squelch the run.
Johnson finished the day shooting 7-12 from the floor, including 3-7 from three-point range to go with four rebounds and a steal for UMass Boston, while Jean was a tidy 8-11 from the field in addition to dishing for three assists. Sophomore forward Paul Kielb (Boston, MA/North Cambridge Catholic) netted a career-high 15 points on 7-11 fom the floor and added a steal and a rebound in 24 minutes of action, while freshman Kristi Gjikondi (Fier, Albania/Malden (MA)HS) chipped in with 12 points on 6-7 from the floor to go with five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Freshman guard Max Barbosa (Dorchester, MA) led the Lions with a game-high 27 points, including 15-17 from the free throw line in addition to four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Freshman guard Aaron Johnson (Boston, MA) contributed with 13 points on 4-6 from the floor to go with four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals, while junior forward Jonathan Georges (Randolph, MA) dropped in 13 points as well and added two boards and a steal.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, November 24 when they host Fitchburg State College at the Clark Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene travels to Cambridge, MA on November 24 to take on Lesley University at 8:00 p.m.
