BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Eric Lorenzi (Gainesville, FL) scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Embry-Riddle University men's basketball team over Mount Ida College, 85-67, to capture the 25th Annual Harbor Invitational this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. This was Embry-Riddle's first appearance in the invitational and with the win, the Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season while the Mustangs fall to 2-1.
After a three-point bucket by sophomore guard Joseph Cabral (Walpole, MA), the Mustangs held a 10-9 advantage with 15:24 remaining in the opening half before Embry-Riddle rattled off 12 straight points over the next four minutes to give it a 21-10 lead with 11:20 to play in the stanza. Lorenzi fueled the run netting eight points during the spurt to help the Eagles take the lead for good.
With 10:33 left to play in regulation, the Mustangs faced their largest deficit of the afternoon, trailing 69-42 but they never let up in the second half and were able to battle back to make things interesting down the stretch. After trailing by 27, Mount Ida regrouped and went on a 23-6 run to make it 74-65 with 4:21 to play. This was the first single digit deficit of the game since the 9:11 mark of the first half for Mount Ida. Sophomore guard Keith Jones (Boston, MA) was superb during the run, netting 10 of his game-high 24 points during the six minute span.
After the Mustangs final charge, Embry-Riddle collected itself and responded closing out the game on an 11-2 run to seal the championship victory.
Jones led all scorers with 24 points to go along with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Darren Martinez (Dorchester, MA) chipped in with a 14 point, six assist effort while sophomore forward Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA) collected 11 points and two steals and rebounds apiece. Cabral also finished in double figures, dropping 10 points in the game for Mount Ida.
For Emrby-Riddle, sophomore forward Ray Graham (DeLand, FL) scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for a solid overall performance. Junior guard Glenn Dalcourt was productive off the bench netting 11 points in his 16 minutes of action while sophomore guard Blake Touchard (Los Angeles, CA) was an assist away from a double-double dropping 10 points to go along with nine assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block. For the second night in a row, junior forward David Butler provided a spark off the bench scoring 10 points and tying Graham for a game-high eight rebounds in the win.
In the Harbor Invitational consolation match-up, senior forward Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, MA) scored a game-high 24 points to lead Framingham State College past University of Massachusetts Boston, 70-66, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. Framingham State improves to 2-4 overall while the loss drops UMass Boston down to 1-4 on the year.
Almodovar shot 66.7% from the floor (8-12) and was perfect from behind the arc (2-2) and the free throw stripe (6-6) to help the Rams pull off a come-from-behind victory over the Beacons. Almodovar also added eight rebounds in the victory.
With 3:29 remaining in the first half, senior forward Ernst Jean (Malden, MA) connected on two free throws to give UMass Boston its largest lead of the afternoon, 30-21. A last second three by Framingham's senior guard Darius Yarrell (Brockton, MA) cut the Beacons' lead to five, making it a 36-31 halftime score.
The Rams chipped away early in the second half before taking control of the action. A layup by junior forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) put UMass Boston on top 41-38 with 14:35 to play before Framingham State went on a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 52-41 lead.
Freshman guard Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA) did all he could to keep the Beacons in the game, scoring seven late second half points, but it was not enough to overcome the lead the Rams had amassed.
Jean ended the afternoon with a team-high 21 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. Mitchell finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior guard Mo Johnson (Portland, OR) scored 14 points including four trifectas while Joseph contributed with nine points and seven rebounds.
For Framingham, senior guard Chad Dixon (Brockton, MA) netted 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and swatted away two shots in the win. Also scoring in double figures for the Rams was junior guard Royce Veal (Dorchester, MA) recording 10 points in the consolation game victory.
All four teams will be back in action next week. Mount Ida College hosts Emmanuel College (MA) this Tuesday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m. Embry-Riddle will host Flagler College on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. Framingham State hosts Brandeis University on Thursday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m., while UMass Boston travels the same day to Suffolk University for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
