BOSTON, MA - Senior center Dylan Holmes (Groton, MA) posted a double-double of 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Salem State College men's basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston this evening at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Vikings improve to 7-2.
UMass Boston owned a 10-8 lead with 16:06 left in the first half, but it would be its last lead of the night as Holmes tied the contest at 10-10 with a lay-up for Salem State with 15:43 showing in the first session. The Vikings later held onto to a 14-13 edge with 12:40 to play in the first stanza, before going on a 15-6 run, fueled by nine points from Holmes, to take a 29-19 advantage with 5:39 on the first half clock. Junior forward Terrell Maddox (Boston, MA/New Mission Hill) scored the game's next six points to pull the Beacons to within 29-25 with 4:08 to go in the first half, but Salem State came right back with nine unanswered points to begin a 15-2 run, led by seven points from Holmes, to take a commanding 44-27 lead with 20 ticks left in the first half, before settling for a 44-29 halftime lead.
UMass Boston opened the second half with eight straight points, courtesy in part to a pair of three-pointers from sophomore guard Anthony Brewster (Boston, MA/John D. O'Bryant), to cut the deficit to 44-37 with 18:41 remaining in the contest, but it would be as close as the Beacons would get as the Vikings responded with a 29-10 run, led by 12 points from Holmes, to take their largest lead of the night at 73-47 with 8:46 showing in the game. Salem State led by no fewer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Holmes was 12-19 from the floor and 6-6 from the free throw line to go with three assists and a pair of steals in 26 minutes for the Vikings, while sophomore guard Nick Linear (Salem, MA) chipped in with 14 points on 7-12 from the field, two rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists in 12 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Brennan Bennett (Whitinsville, MA) also contributed with nine points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Maddox led UMass Boston with a season-high 21 points on 8-15 from the floor and 5-5 from the line in addition to six rebounds and two assists, while junior guard Aaron Jones (Boston, MA/Catholic Memorial) netted 11 points, grabbed a career-high nine boards, dished for six assists and came up with a pair of steals. Senior point guard A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) dropped in 10 points on 3-5 from the field, registered five assists and made a steal. Sophomore forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) also chipped in for UMB with nine points, eight rebounds and a steal.
The Beacons will be in action again when they host Little East Conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while Salem State hosts Denison University on December 29 in the first round of the Salem State College Christmas Classic at 7:00 p.m.
