MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATED BY EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 73-53

BOSTON, MA - Four players scored in double-digits as the Eastern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated host University of Massachusetts Boston, 73-53, in a Little East Conference game this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in LEC play, while the Warriors improve to 5-4 and 1-1.
The Eastern Connecticut defense forced 30 turnovers and held UMass Boston to just 36.2% (17-47) from the floor for the game, while owning a 31-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Warriors never trailed in the contest and raced out to a 23-5 advantage with 9:09 to play in the first half, fueled by seven points from junior guard Edwin Ortiz (Hartford, CT). The Beacons came back with eight straight points to cut the deficit to 23-13 with 6:10 showing in the opening period, but freshman forward Jamie Kohn (Columbia, CT) capped a 9-1 Eastern Connecticut burst with a three-pointer to give the visitors a 32-14 advantage with 4:07 to go in the first half, before settling for a 36-23 halftime lead.
Junior forward Terrell Maddox (Boston, MA/Mission Hill) converted a pair of free throws for UMass Boston to make it 36-24, just 18 seconds into the second half, before the Warriors put together a 17-6 run to take a 53-30 lead with 13:12 remaining in the game. The Beacons responded with a 12-4 stretch, led by eight points from senior point guard A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA), to pull to within 57-42 with 7:33 to go in the game, but it would be as close as they would get as Eastern Connecticut went on a 16-6 run, paced by six points from sophomore guard Courtney Williams (Middletown, CT), to take its largest lead of the game at 73-48 with 2:32 remaining in the game.
Freshman guard Nick Nedwick (Irvington, NY) led the Warriors with 14 points on 6-8 from the floor to go with three assists, a steal and a blocked shot in 22 minutes, while Kohn registered a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds and added five assists and a steal. Ortiz finished with 12 points on 5-10 from the field to go with a rebound and a block in 19 minutes off the bench and Simmons chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Titus led UMass Boston with 14 points on 6-10 from the floor and grabbed four boards and dished for two assists, while freshman guard Chris Milton (Milton, MA) contributed with eight points and four rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Aaron Jones (Boston, MA/Catholic Memorial) also chipped in with seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
