WHITE NAMED LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball player Jason White (Roxbury, MA/Charlestown HS) has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of January 4-10, it was announced today by the conference. The award marks the third time a UMass Boston player has earned the honor this season with sophomore guard Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA/Wayland HS) being named the top rookie for the weeks of November 23-29 and November 30 to December 6.
The freshman was outstanding in the first three games of his collegiate career, averaging 15.3 points, 5.0 steals, 3.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting 46.2% (18-39) from the floor, including 44.4% (4-9) from three-point range. The guard, who became eligible to play for the Beacons following the first semester, made his collegiate debut with 26 points on 10-15 shooting and added five steals and three assists in an 83-72 loss at Nichols College on January 5. A product of Charlestown High School's championship basketball teams, White followed his initial effort with 16 points, five steals, two rebounds and two assists in a 77-76 defeat to Tufts University on January 7. The 6'0", 185-pound guard capped the week in a 67-63 loss at Eastern Connecticut State University with four points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals on January 9.
In just three games on the season, White has been tabbed to start twice and already ranks fifth on the squad with 12 total steals. His scoring average currently leads the team.
During his career at Charlestown High School, White was named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team as well as the Boston Herald Dream Team.
UMass Boston is 3-10 on the season, including a 1-2 record LEC play. The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, January 12 when they host Plymouth State University in conference action at the Clark Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m.
