NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball player Jason White (Roxbury, MA/Charlestown HS) has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of January 18-24, it was announced today by the conference.
The award marks the third straight week the White has earned the honor and the fifth time a UMass Boston player has earned top rookie distinction this season with sophomore guard Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA/Wayland HS) being named the top rookie for the weeks of November 23-29 and November 30 to December 6. White was also the top newcomer for the week of January 4-10 and last week to become the first Beacons' men's basketball player to earn the award three straight weeks since Amigo Paniagua earned rookie of the week honors three straight times from November 29 to December 13, 2004.
White was outstanding, once again for UMass Boston, averaging 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while adding a steal in two games. The freshman netted 17 points on 7-14 shooting, while grabbing seven rebounds and handing out four assists in 27 minutes vs. University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on January 19. The guard capped the week with 19 points and a season-high nine rebounds in addition to an assist and a steal in 25 minutes at Keene State College on January 23.
In just seven games on the season, the former Charlestown High School product has been tabbed to start six times and already ranks fifth on the squad with 17 total steals. He is averaging a team-leading16.4 points and ranks second on the squad with 2.4 steals and 3.0 assists. The six-foot guard is grabbing 4.6 rebounds per game to place third on the team as well and has scored double digits in points on five occasions, including a season-high of 26 on 10-15 from the floor in his collegiate debut at Nichols College on January 5.
During his career at Charlestown High School, White was named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team as well as the Boston Herald Dream Team.
The Beacons are 3-15 on the season, including a 1-6 record LEC play. UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, January 26 when it travels to Gorham, ME for a 7:30 p.m. contest with Little East Conference foe University of Southern Maine.
