Men's Hockey Uses Huge Second Period to Earn Conference Win
BIDDEFORD, Maine - Men's hockey (3-5-2, 1-5 ECAC East) scored five times in the second period to erase a 3-1 deficit on its way to an 8-3 victory over the University of New England (2-6-1, 1-5 ECAC East) in ECAC East action Saturday afternoon at the Biddeford Ice Arena.
Trailing 3-1 very early in the second, UMass Boston reeled off seven unanswered tallies -- five in the frame -- to blow open the contest. Senior Andrew Burke (Southampton, Pa.) and freshman Corey Chakeen (Quincy, Mass.) notched four of the five goals for the visitors in the decisive period.
Faiz Khan (Newhall, Calif.) joined Burke and Chakeen as a repeat goal-scorer for the Beacons, who outshot UNE 21-4 to pull away in the second period. Senior Anthony Fitti (Havertown, Pa.) recorded three assists in the frame.
Senior Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.) finished with three helpers, while Chakeen and Khan added an assist to their two-goal efforts to account for three points apiece.
The Nor'easters received goals from senior Scott McManaman and Chris Glover and Zeth Zielinski. Zach Lokey contributed a pair of assists to push his team-high total to 11.
Between the pipes, senior netminder Kevin Bendel recorded his first win of the season after tallying 18 stops in Saturday's contest. His Nor'easters counterpart Craig Ryan combined for 22 stops in the first two periods, while Ian Edwards registered five saves in the third stanza.
On the day, UMass Boston was 2-for-7 on the power-play, while New England ended the contest 2-for-3.
Men's hockey returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Wentworth Institute of Technology. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
