Men's Hockey Cruises Past St. Michael's in Regular Season Finale

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – With five different players each finding the back of the net men's hockey closed out their 2011-12 regular season with a convincing 5-1 ECAC East conference win over St. Michael's College Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena.

Saturday's win improved the Beacons overall record to 13-9-3, while in conference they closed out the regular season with a 9-8-1 record.  St. Michael's College ends the regular season with a 6-17-2 record, 3-14-1 in the conference.

Playing a major part in the conference win was a two goal first and second periods.  A lone goal in the third secured the Beacons conference win.

Netting the game's first goal was Tim Richter (Naugatuck, Conn.) off of a Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill.) assist less than three minutes into the contest.  Moments later it was Anthony Fitti (Havertown, Pa.) who gave the Beacons a 2-0 lead after driving home his team-leading 10th goal of the season.  Also notching his 10th goal of the 2011-12 season was sophomore Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J.), who made it a 3-1 game midway through the second period.

Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.) capped off the two goal second period with a power-play score to give UMass Boston some additional breathing room.  Corey Chakeen (Quincy, Mass.) secured the Beacons win with a goal at the 11:41 mark in the third period.

Between the pipes Kevin Bendel (Denville, N.J.) made 34 saves to earn his eighth win of the year.  St. Michael's College netminder Eric McGuirk totaled 29 stops in the loss.

On the afternoon UMass Boston was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Beacons penalty-kill held the Purple Knights to 0-for-4 on the man-up opportunities.

With Saturday's win the Beacons secured the fifth seed in this year's ECAC East tournament.  They will face the fourth seeded Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College, who with 1-0 win over Castleton State College earned the home playoff game next weekend.  Official start times and tournament bracket will be released later this weekend.
