SAUGUS, Mass.—UMass Boston men's hockey head coach Peter Belisle and senior Rob Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J.) were honored at the New England Hockey Writers Award Banquet Thursday evening at the Prince Restaurant.
Belisle was recognized as the New England Coach of the Year at the DII/III level, while Florentino and Daniel were the first players in school history to be named DII/III New England All Stars by the Writers Association.
"It was awesome to have my family, my staff, our administration and my colleagues there, it made it a really special event," Belisle said.
"I actually joked about having my dad [Bill Belisle] there. He's been a pretty successful coach at his level and I've probably gone to 25 banquets for him in that fashion, and to go to a banquet where I was being honored as a Coach of the Year and having him there and my bosses and my wife and my staff, made it all that more special.
I couldn't thank my players enough for all that they've done, especially the two guys that were honored that evening… I talked about this being a staff award, you don't do this alone and these guys are in the trenches with me every day and I can't thank them enough. I need to get them to break this award into three pieces and give it to them.
And last but not least, you're only as good as your administration. To have Vice Chancellor for Athletics & Recreation, Special Projects & Programs Charlie Titus and Associate Director of Athletics Cheryl Aaron there, who are such huge supporters of myself and this program, makes it all that more special.
New England Hockey is a pretty special organization and to be honored by them and to be in that room is pretty surreal."
The Beacons finished the 2012-13 campaign 19-6-2 and earned the second seed in the ECAC East Tournament, both of which were their best finishes in over two decades.
UMass Boston returns all about five seniors for the 2013-14 season, including bringing back Daniel, ECAC East Rookie of the Year Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) and ECAC East All Rookie Team members Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) and Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
