GORHAM, Maine—Senior Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) registered the first multi-goal game of his career with two second-period goals to help UMass Boston Men's Hockey (6-1-2, 3-1-2 ECAC East) earn a hard-fought 3-2 win over host University of Southern Maine (4-5-0, 3-4-0 ECAC East) Saturday afternoon.
The Beacons senior fourth-liner entered his fourth season having played in 36 games with three goals, five assists and one multi-point game to his name. Kuhn had added to that total in a hurry over the past four games, recording two assists November 30 in a win over Johnson & Wales University and adding a goal and assist in UMB's last two games entering Saturday afternoon.
With the Beacons trailing 2-1 midway through the contest, he scored the game-tying tally at 11:30 of the second and added the go-ahead goal, his first career game-winner, at 19:34 to lift UMB to a difficult road conference victory.
Fellow senior Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J.) added the Beacons' first goal, while Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.), Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Cody Dixon (Hales Corner, Wisc.) and Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y) each picked up an assist.
ECAC East Goalie of the Week Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) helped the Beacons extend their unbeaten streak to seven in a row, by making 24 saves on 26 shots. In his last four games, Andrews has allowed two goals or less and posted 22 saves or more, to help the Beacons go a perfect 4-0.
Cole Klippenstein and Kelby Lorenz scored for the Huskies in the loss, while Dylan Wells recorded 24 saves on 27 shots.
UMass Boston outshot the Huskies 27-26, despite only earning an advantage in the shots column in the first stanza. The two teams combined for 16 penalties, with UMass Boston finishing 1-for-3 on the power-play and USM ending the day 1-for-5.
Klippenstein stunned the Beacons with a goal just 51 seconds into the contest, when he took a pass from Alex Pompeo and slid it by Andrews for an early 1-0 Southern Maine lead.
The Beacons' top-line power-play unit tied the score 10 minutes later, as Daniel fired home his fourth goal of the season, off of passes from DeAugustine and MacIntyre.
Southern Maine took their second and final lead of the day at 7:18, when Lorenz sent a shot by Andrews to make it 2-1. Todd Bannerman and Ryan Seward were credited with assists on the play.
Kuhn evened the score at 2-2 at 11:30, as he received passes from Dixon and Grinhaus and rocketed home a shot for his second goal of the year.
The former Boston Bulldog gave the Beacons the lead at 19:34. Kuhn skated in all alone and beat Wells for an unassisted tally to give UMB a 3-2 advantage.
UMass Boston managed to hold on to their one-goal lead in the third period, as Andrews stopped all 10 shots he faced.
The Beacons will look to finish off the fall semester on a high-note, when UMass Boston hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets to the Frozen Fenway game (January 7 at 4pm) will be given away during the contest, for more information check out beaconsathletics.com.
