Box Score

NEW LONDON, CT - Joe Capuano (Melrose, MA) tallied scores in each of the first two periods to lead the Connecticut College men's hockey team (3-8) to a 5-2 victory against University of Massachusetts Boston (5-4-1, 2-3-1 ECAC East) at Dayton Arena in New London, CT Friday night. Julien Boutet (Amos, QUE) and Lucas Chavira Schramm (Phoenix, AZ) both had two assists in the second straight victory for the Camels.

Sophomore defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) potted a pair of power-play goals in the setback for the visiting Beacons. Senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) dished out two assists for UMass Boston.

The Beacons had a great chance to get on the board first. Junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) fired a shot from point-blank range with 11:15 remaining on the doorstep in front of the goal but Greg Parker (Trenton, ONT) was able to make the save for Connecticut College. The Camels catapulted out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 12:43 of the opening period. Boutet delivered a pass through the slot from near the right circle to Ryan Riffe (South Berwick, ME), who rifled home a one-timer at the left side of the goal for the Camels. Schramm contributed with the second assist on the goal.

Less than a minute later with 6:26 remaining, Capuano made it a 2-0 game. The junior forward took a lead pass from Sean Driscoll (Peabody, MA) and made a nifty one-on-one move on UMass Boston sophomore goalie Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ). Bendel went down to the ice to make the initial save but Capuano followed his own shot, stuffing home the rebound for his third goal of the season and the hosts carried a two goal lead into the first intermission.

In the middle period, the Camels opened up a 4-0 lead with two more goals scored 2:12 apart. Capuano put in his second scored of the night at 4:54 of the second. Boutet and Schramm assisted on the marker. With 12:54 remaining in the frame, junior defenseman Sean Tuohy (Salisbury Mills, NY) potted the third goal of his career on an assisting feed from Michael O'Donnell (Winchester, MA).

The Beacons finally got on the board with 3:48 left in the second period. Kranzky and junior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) assisted Sands on a power play goal. Sands buried a wrist shot from the point for his second goal to halve the Camel lead with 8:57 remaining in regulation.

With 2:13 to play, the Beacons emptied their net in desperation. But Ryan Joyce (Dorchester, MA) put the game away with an empty-netter, taking a feed from Brett Moore (Medfield, MA) near center ice.

Parker finished with 19 saves in the victory for the Camels. Bendel stopped 21 shots in the loss for UMass Boston.

The Beacons will be in action again tomorrow when they head over to nearby Medford, MA for an ECAC East/NESCAC contest with Tufts University at 7:35 p.m., while Connecticut College hosts Babson College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
