Jan. 9, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Mark Colp (Wareham, MA) tallied four points with a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Amherst College men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 7-1, tonight in an ECAC East/NESCAC contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 5-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play, while the Lord Jeffs improve to 5-3-1 and 3-1-1.
Amherst's penalty killing unit was outstanding, shutting UMass Boston out on seven possessions.
Colp netted his first goal of the night at 9:33 as part of a three-goal first period for the Lord Jeffs and potted his second tally on the power play to cap the scoring with his fourth goal of the season and the fourth score of the third period with 58 seconds left in the game, courtesy of a helper from senior forward Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) and junior forward Keith Nelson (Manalapan, NJ). Colp assisted on Amherst's first goal of the evening when he and junior defenseman Andrew Stevenson (Newton, MA) found Nelson for his third goal of the season just 2:06 into the contest. Nelson picked up an assist of his own on a Powers' goal with 45 seconds left in the opening stanza for a 3-0 Lord Jeffs lead.
Nelson and Colp combined to find junior forward Ted Vickers (Chilliwack, BC) for the first goal of the third period at the 6:35 mark on the power play for a 4-0 Amherst lead and sophomore forward Jason Degiovanni (Brooklyn, NY) fired his first goal of the season just 1:13 later on an assist from senior forwards Will Collins (Edina, MN) and Olufemi Amurawaiye (Whitby, ONT) at 7:48 of the third session. Sophomore forward Trip Wray (Walpole, MA) set up classmate Matthew Rhone (Dedham, MA) for his fourth goal of the campaign and the sixth of the night for the Lord Jeffs at the 10:44 mark of the final period.
Sophomore forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) and freshman Jeff Van Siclen (Alamo, CA) hooked up with junior forward Anthony Cosmano (Wheaton, IL) for his second goal of the season with just seven ticks left on the clock to prevent the shutout and put the Beacons on the board to make it 7-1.
Sophomore goaltender Jonathan Larose (Boyle, ALB) was outstanding for Amherst, making a season-high 35 saves to earn the victory, while junior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) turned away 24 of 29 shots in 49:01 of action, before yielding to senior Chris Testa (Massapequa, NY), who stopped two of four shots in the final 10:59 of play for UMass Boston.
The Beacons will be in action again tomorrow when they host Hamilton College at the Clark Athletic Center at 3:00 p.m., while the Lord Jeffs travel to Babson Park, MA to play Babson College at 4:00 p.m.
