Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Joe Buicko (Altamont, NY) notched a career-high three points with a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Hamilton College men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-2, today in an ECAC East/NESCAC contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 5-5-2 overall and 2-4-1 in league play, while the Continentals improve to 5-4-1 and 4-2-0.

Hamilton netted the only two goals of the first period, including Buicko's first score at 10:18 of the period on an assist from senior defenseman Kevin Osborne (Peabody, MA) and junior forward Harry Biggs (West Newbury, MA) on a four-on-three power play for a 2-0 margin. Biggs and freshman forward Bryan Kelly (Plymouth, MA) set up junior forward Vaclav Tomicek (Leberec, Czech Republic) for his third goal of the season at 6:12 of the initial period to open the scoring.

Freshman forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) cut the deficit in half for UMass Boston with his sixth goal of the season on a helper from freshman forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and sophomore forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) at the 14:12 mark of the second period, but senior blueliner Jared Leslie (Markham, ONT) wasted no time in answering for the Continentals with his third goal of the year coming just 65 seconds later to increase the visitors' lead to 3-1 with 15:17 gone. Buicko set up junior forward Chris Lorenc (Clifton, NJ) for his team-leading 10th goal of the campaign with just 1:01 left in the middle period for a 4-1 Hamilton advantage.

Sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) and freshman blueliner Gentry Zollars (Bethel Park, PA) combined to find sophomore forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) for his sixth tally of the season at the 9:48 mark of the third period to pull the Beacons to within 4-2, but it would be as close as they would get as freshman forward Mike Iwanski (Bolton, ONT) fed Buicko for an empty netter and his fifth goal of the year to cap the score at 5-2 for the Continentals.

Junior goaltender Ian Stearns (Fitchburg, MA) stopped 24 shots to earn the victory for Hamilton, which owned a 41-26 shot advantage. Senior Chris Testa (Massapequa, NY) made 36 saves for UMass Boston.

The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, January 16 when they travel to Colchester, VT to take on Saint Michael's College at 7:00 p.m., while the Continentals travel to Amherst, MA on January 13 for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with Amherst College.
