Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Skidmore College ice hockey team suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss to UMass Boston in Saturday afternoon's ECAC Men's East matchup at the Saratoga City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 2-5-2 in the league and 3-10-2 overall, while the Beacons improve to 6-3-0 in the league and 9-4-0 overall.
Skidmore's Alex Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) got the scoring started with a power play goal at the 17:31 mark of the first period. Mykolenko scored from a tough angle for his 3rd goal of the season, Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) and Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass.) picked up the assists.
After a scoreless second period, UMass Boston's Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) deflected home a shot from the point for his first goal of the season 12:06 into the third period to tie it up at 1-1. Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, Fla.) and David Lun (Grand Rapids, Mich.) assisted on the goal.
After a scoreless final 7:54 of the third, the game went into overtime where Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill.) won it for the Beacons, putting home a rebound 2:34 into the overtime for his 4th of the year.
Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) finished with 16 saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Kevin Bendel (Denville, N.J.) made 25 stops for UMass Boston.
Skidmore held a 26-18 shot advantage over the Beacons.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Friday, Jan. 21 at Amherst while UMass Boston will be back in action on Tuesday night, Jan. 18 against UMass Dartmouth.
