Jan. 18, 2011
BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) scored a goal to go along with three assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 6-2, this evening at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With his third assist of the contest, Tufman became the 12th player in the program's history to record his 100th career point and the first since Jeff Mead accomplished the milestone during 1993-94. Tufman also moves into a tie for ninth all-time with 63 career assists, matching the mark of Charles Plaza (1986-90). The Beacons, who received a vote in the most recent USCHO.com national poll, improve to 11-4-0 on the campaign to match the program's best start since the 1987-88 season while the loss drops the Corsairs to 9-4-1 on the year.
UMass Boston freshman forward Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, NJ) opened up the game's scoring with a pair of first period goals to put the Beacons on top, 2-0. Both goals were assisted by Tufman as well as senior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) coming at the 9:05 and 16:57 marks in the first. The Corsairs made it a one-goal game when sophomore forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA) netted his second goal of the season just 11 seconds after Daniel's ninth goal of the campaign to cut the Beacons lead to 2-1.
To open the second period scoring, Atsoff potted his team-leading 10th goal of the year just 6:02 into the frame to make it a 3-1 contest. The goal would prove to be the game-winner and also make history for Tufman as he and senior blueliner Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) were credited with the assist. The helper was Tufman's 100th career point and marked only the 12th time in program history that the pinnacle has been reached.
"It's a great honor and definitely a good feeling to take care of business," said Tufman. "For something like this to happen, it starts with the guys in the locker room. Everybody worked hard to help make this possible and I'm just happy to be able to share it with them."
Senior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) got into the scoring mix with his sixth marker of the year on the power play at the 11:20 mark of the middle period with the help of junior forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) and junior forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) to make it 4-1, UMass Boston. Freshman forward Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, NY) capped the periods scoring with his first collegiate goal coming with 5:48 to play. An initial shot by Calhoun was stopped and Grinhaus fired back a rebound which was controlled by Corsairs goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA), but Grinhaus was able to slam home the third shot in the sequence for his first goal of the year to give the Beacons a comfortable 5-1 margin at the end of two periods.
Tufman collected his 101st career point with his sixth goal of the season just 1:28 into the third period to extend the Beacons lead to 6-1. Both sophomore blueliner Steven Weston (Henniker, NH) and Atsoff assisted on the goal. With the marker, both Tufman and Atsoff each recorded their fourth points of the game. UMass Dartmouth sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA) wrapped up the night's scoring with his fifth tally of the year off of a slapshot from inside the left circle to beat senior netminder Thomas Speer (Wausau, WI), making 6-2, UMB, with 2:18 left in regulation.
Speer ended the contest with 24 saves to improve to 5-3-0 on the season while Tracy finished with 33 stops to fall to 9-4-1 on the campaign.
The Beacons will be back in action on Friday, January 21 when they host the University of Southern Maine at 7:00 p.m. while the Corsairs travel to Plymouth, NH to take on Plymouth State University this Thursday, January 20 for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
