NEW BEDFORD, MA - Senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) netted a pair of goals and senior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) stopped all 28 shots he faced to lead the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 5-0, in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena in New Bedford, MA Tuesday evening.
The Beacons scored twice in the second period to take a 3-0 lead after two. Sophomore forward Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA) stuffed home the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI) at the 6:44 mark for his third goal of the season, and Kranzky fired home a feed from junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) from point-blank range at 18:31 with UMass Boston on a power play. Sophomore forward Jimmy Ennis (Roslindale, MA) also assisted on Burke's tally, while senior forward Anthony Cosmano (Wheaton, IL) was credited with a halper on Kranky's marker.
The Beacons took a 1-0 lead at 11:35 of the first period. Sophomore forward Bill Baker (Vancouver, BC) scored his first collegiate goal from the lower edge of the face-off circle, firing a shot high into the net after taking an assist from Tejchma and sophomore forward Jeff Van Siclen (Alamo, CA). The Beacons netted a pair of power play goals in the third period, with junior defenseman Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, PA) scoring on a shot off a face-off at 10:47 for his third goal of the year coming from Jacona and sophomore forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and Kranzky scoring for the fourth time this season on a rebound from a shot off the stick of Jacona with just 27 seconds left in the contest.
UMass Boston out shot UMass Dartmouth, 39-28. Freshman goaltender Jonathan Morrow (Romeo, MI/Jersey Hitmen-EJHL) made 34 saves for the Corsairs, while Donovan's third career shutout ties the Beacons' school record held by Frank Soltesz (1994-96, 97-99).
UMD dropped to 5-7-1 with the defeat, while UMass Boston improved to 7-6-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Thursday evening. The Beacons will visit University of Southern Maine in Gorham, ME for a 7:00 p.m. ECAC East match-up at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22.
