BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) netted his second goal of the afternoon just 25 seconds into the overtime period to give the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team a 5-4 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston today in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons last three losses have all come in overtime as they fall to 6-9-2 overall, including 2-8-1 in league play, while the Huskies improve to 8-9-0 and 5-6-0.
Southern Maine wasted no time in the overtime period with freshman forward Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, ME) finding Gordon in the slot on the left side for his team-leading 11th goal of the season and the game-deciding tally at 4:35 of the overtime session for the only shot of the period.
UMass Boston cracked the scoring column of a very busy first period when freshman forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) fed classmate Jim Ennis (Roslindale, MA) for his first collegiate goal at the 4:56 mark of the first period for a 1-0 edge, but Gordon combined with sophomore defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, ONT) to set up Rautenberg for his sixth tally of the year less than two minutes later to knot the contest at 1-1 for the Huskies with 6:47 gone in the opening period. Conter and sophomore forward Zach Joy (Dover, NH) kept the pressure on for Southern Maine when they found senior forward Kyle Smith (Auburn, ME) for his first score of the campaign just 28 seconds later to give the visitors a 2-1 edge, but the Beacons were quick to answer when junior Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) connected with junior blueliner Steve Ebbole (Wheaton, IL) for his first marker of the season at the 8:37 mark to tie the game at 2-2. UMass Boston reclaimed the lead and capped the first period scoring when sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) assisted on classmate Vinnie Jacona's (East Stroudsburg, PA) fifth goal of the year at 12:14 for a 3-2 margin.
The Huskies deadlocked the game again at 3-3, courtesy of freshman forward Travis L'Heureux' (Berlin, NH) first collegiate score on a helper from junior forwards Pat Noonan (Burlington, MA) and Dan Falbo (Newmarket, ONT) at 2:19 of the second period. Gordon gave Southern Maine a 4-3 lead at the 12:47 mark of the middle period, but sophomore forwards Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) and Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) set up Fitti for his third goal of the season, just 46 seconds later for the Beacons at 13:33.
The teams took a breather from scoring in the final period as 23 combined shots were all stopped to send the contest into the extra period.
Freshman goaltender Casey Cox (Springvale, ME) turned away 27 shots to record his first collegiate victory in his first career start for the Huskies, while junior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) made 33 saves for UMass Boston.
The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, January 30 when they travel to Saratoga Springs, NY to take on Skidmore College in an ECAC East match-up at 7:00 p.m., while Southern Maine goes to Waterville, ME to play Colby College on January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
