MEN'S ICE HOCKEY BLANKED BY No. 2 NORWICH, 2-0
Jan. 29, 2010
BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Craig Serino (Saugus, MA) netted a goal and added an assist and senior goalie Ryan Klingensmith (Morton, PA) stopped all 22 shots he faced to earn his sixth shutout of the season to lead the number two nationally-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 2-0, this evening in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Cadets, who are ranked in the USCHO.com poll and received a pair of first place votes, extend their unbeaten streak to 18 games and improve to 15-0-3 overall and 11-0-1 in ECAC East play, while the Beacons fall to 8-8-1 and 4-7-1.
The win avenges Norwich's last loss which came against UMass Boston in the Quarterfinals of the ECAC East Tournament on February 28, 2009 in Northfield, VT. The Beacons won the game, 1-0, at the 15:46 mark of overtime and later went on to play for the tournament championship. The shutout also snaps UMass Boston's streak of 64 games without being blanked, dating back to December 1, 2007 when it was beaten at Trinity College (CT), 8-0.
Following a scoreless first period, the Cadets took advantage of a late first period penalty committed by the Beacons and scored just 61 seconds into the second stanza when Serino and senior defenseman Eric Tallent (Garland, TX) combined to set up freshman forward Kyle Thomas (Waltham, MA) on the power play for his team-leading 13th goal of the season and a 1-0 edge. The score snapped a scoring drought of 96:47 to UMass Boston, dating back to last year's playoff contest.
The Beacons looked to even the score at the eight-minute mark when junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) picked up a loose puck in the left crease and snapped off a shot, but Klingensmith was able to recover and deflect the shot with his pad to preserve the eventual shutout, which was the 10th of his career.
Serino gave Norwich an insurance goal with 4:24 remaining in the middle period when he lifted a feed from junior blueliner Greg Eskedjian (Barrie, ONT) into the back of the net for his fourth tally of the year and a 2-0 margin at 15:36.
Senior goaltender Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) made 24 saves for UMass Boston in 59:28 of action. The Beacons outshot Norwich, 19-17, through the first two periods, before being outshot, 11-3, in the final period of play.
UMass Boston will be in action again tomorrow when it hosts ECAC East foe Saint Michael's College at 4:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Cadets travel to Babson Park, MA tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. tilt with Babson College.
