SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Freshman goaltender Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 40 shots to earn his first collegiate shutout and the University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team made the most of 14 shots in a 4-0 victory at Skidmore College tonight in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest in Saratoga, NY. The Beacons improve to 7-9-2 overall and 3-8-1 in league play, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 9-8-0 and 5-7-0.
Following a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) put UMass Boston on the board with his sixth goal of the season at 7:39 of the second period.
Freshman forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) increased the Beacons' lead to 2-0 on the power play with his eighth goal of the year on a helper from freshman defenseman John Hubbard (Arlington, TX) and freshman forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) just 2:33 into the third period. UMass Boston took advantage of the power play again when sophomore Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) set up classmate Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) for his seventh goal of the season for a 3-0 UMB lead at the 13:36 mark. Junior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) capped the scoring for the Beacons with an empty-netter for his sixth goal of the year coming with 61 seconds left in the contest.
Skidmore owned a commanding 40-14 shot advantage, but were stonewalled everytime by Bendel, including on eight power play opportunities.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, January 31 when it travels to Castleton, VT to take on ECAC East foe Castleton State College at 4:00 p.m., while Skidmore hosts Babson College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
