UMASS BOSTON MEN'S HOCKEY ROUTS SAINT MICHAEL'S, 7-2
Jan. 30, 2010
BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Michael Crowder (Flint, MI) netted a pair of goals and junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) picked up three assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team over visiting Saint Michael's College, 7-2, this afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 9-8-1 overall and 5-7-1 in league play and are off to their best record after 18 games since they posted a 12-6 mark in 1991-92. The Purple Knights fall to 3-11-3 and 2-8-3.
UMass Boston's special teams were outstanding on the afternoon with four power play goals in nine chances and a short-handed score.
Saint Michael's cracked the scoring column first when sophomore forward Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, MB) and junior forward Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, ONT) combined to set up sophomore forward Brady Earle (Columbia, MD) at the 10:54 mark of the opening period. The Beacons responded mightily with five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead early in the third period.
Junior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) fed sophomore forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) on the power play for his first goal of the season at 16:36 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1 for UMass Boston. Freshman defenseman Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, FL) and sophomore forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI) combined to find sophomore forward Jimmy Ennis (Roslindale, MA) for a short-handed goal at 3:08 of the second period and a 2-1 edge. The Beacons dominated the ice, taking shot after shot, but could not break through until Crowder netted his first goal of the afternoon on the power play at 15:28 on a helper from Jacona and junior blueliner Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, PA) to give the home team a 3-1 margin. UMass Boston struck again on the power play just 89 seconds later when sophomore defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) potted his fourth goal of the year, courtesy of senior forwards Anthony Cosmano (Wheaton, IL) and Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) at 16:57 for a 4-1 cushion. Kranzky wasted no time to begin the third period with his eighth goal of the campaign for the Beacons coming just 36 seconds into the frame on an assist from Jacona and sophomore forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) for a 5-1 advantage.
Earle struck again for the Purple Knights to cut the deficit to 5-2 with his team-leading ninth goal of the year on a feed from MacKinnon at 12:34 of the period.
UMass Boston closed out the stanza with a pair of goals when Fitti set up senior defenseman Steve Ebbole (Wheaton, IL) for a blast from the point that Atsoff tipped into the back of the net for his eighth tally of the year at 16:46 and Jacona located Crowder on the power play for his second score of the afternoon and sixth of the season with just 10 seconds remaining in the contest to give the Beacons a 7-2 lead.
Sophomore goalie Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 23 shots to earn the victory for UMass Boston, while freshman goaltender Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, QUE) made 39 saves for Saint Michael's.
The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, February 5 when they travel to Manchester, NH to take on ECAC East foe Saint Anselm College at 7:00 p.m., while the Purple Knights head to Hooksett, NH to take on Southern New Hampshire University on February 2 at 7:30 p.m.
