CASTLETON, VT -- The Castleton State College men's ice hockey team overcame a 2-1 deficit with a pair of third period power play goals, including sophomore forward Stuart Stefan's (Delhi, ONT) game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play to defeat visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 3-2, this afternoon in Castleton, VT. UMass Boston falls to 7-10-2 overall and 3-9-1 in league play, while the Spartans improve to 9-8-2 and 5-6-2.
Senior defenseman Jared Lavender (Cleveland Heights, OH) and senior forward Brandon Heck (Forrestburg, ALB) combined to find Stefan for his sixth goal of the season at the 10:01 mark of the third period on the power play for a 3-2 Castleton State edge.
Sophomore forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) opened the game's scoring with a goal in his fifth straight game for UMass Boston on an assist from sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) and freshman forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) at 1:45 of the second period. The Spartans knotted the contest at 1-1 when junior forward Eric Curtis (Rockford, MI) found Heck for his ninth goal of the year at 7:36 of the middle period, but the Beacons reclaimed the lead when freshman forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and senior forward Jacob Cline (Atlanta, GA) fed freshman blueliner Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) for his fourth tally of the season and a 2-1 UMB margin with 5:43 left in the second stanza.
Castleton State owned a 39-18 shot advantage as freshman goaltender Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 36 shots for UMass Boston in the loss. Senior goalie Jay Seals (Alma, MI) made 16 saves for the Spartans.
The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, February 6 when they host New England College in an ECAC East tilt at 7:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while Castleton State travels to Salem, MA to play Salem State College on February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
