NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE DOWNS MEN'S HOCKEY, 5-2
Feb. 6, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Olli Kalliosaari (Hattula, Finland) matched a career-high for points with a pair of goals and an assist to lead the New England College men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-2, tonight in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 7-11-2 overall and 3-10-0 in ECAC East play, while the Pilgrims improve to 13-6-1 and 8-5-1.
Kalliosaari opened the evening's scoring for New England College when junior defenseman Trevor Turner (Westbank, BC) and freshman forward Emil Alengard (Linkoping, Sweden) found him on the power play at the 10:38 mark of the first period, but UMass Boston responded just 57 seconds later on its own power play when junior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) and sophomore forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) set up freshman blueliner Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) for his fifth tally of the season to knot the contest at 1-1 with 11:35 gone in the period.
The Pilgrims regained the lead early in the second period on the power play when sophomore forward Johan Granath (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior forward Jon Globke (West Bloomfield, MI) combined to assist on junior forward Alex Muse's (Lynnfield, MA) sixth marker of the year at 6:13 for a 2-1 edge. It looked like it would be the lone goal of the period, but following a scoring chance by the Beacons in the final minute, sophomore forward Dylan Exton (Calgary, ALB) potted his sixth goal of the year into the lower right corner of the back of the net on a feed from junior forward Jeff Armando (Canton, MA) and Turner with just 17.6 seconds left in the second stanza for a 3-1 NEC lead.
Kalliosaari wasted no time in the third period to notch his second goal of the night and eighth of the season when Granath and Alengard fed him just 44 ticks into the period to give New England College a 4-1 advantage. UMass Boston cut the deficit in half with another power play goal when sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) and freshman forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) connected with freshman blueliner John Hubbard (Arlington, TX) for his first collegiate goal at the 3:59 mark of the final period to make it 4-2, but it would be as close as the Beacons would get as Granath buried his sixth goal of the season for the Pilgrims on a helper from Kalliosaari and sophomore defenseman Eric Simonsson (Oskarshamn, Sweden) at 11:24 of the third period for a 5-2 lead.
Freshman goaltender Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) made 37 saves for UMass Boston, while sophomore Aaron Harvey (Milford, NS) turned away 34 shots to earn the victory for New England College.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, February 7 when they host ECAC East foe Saint Anselm College at 3:00 p.m. in the Clark Athletic Center, while the Pilgrims travel to Babson Park, MA tomorrow to take on Babson College at 4:00 p.m.
