BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Charlie Townsend (Pennington, NJ) netted a pair of goals to lead the nationally-ranked number nine Middlebury College men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-1, this evening in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East/New England Small College Athletic Conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Panthers, who are ranked in the latest USCHO.com poll, win their third straight game to improve to 13-4-4 overall and 9-3-4 in league play, while the Beacons fall to 9-11-1 and 5-10-1.
Middlebury opened the game with the only two goals in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Martin Drolet (Lachine, QUE) put the visitors on the board when he took a feed from freshman forward Mathieu Dubuc (Blainville, QUE) and freshman forward Tom Clayton (New Canaan, CT) and potted his team-leading 14th goal of the year on the power play at the 4:03 mark. Senior forward John Sullivan (Delmar, NY) and sophomore forward Jak Knelman (Edina, MN) combined to set up Townsend for his first score of the night with 3:04 to go in the opening frame.
UMass Boston cut the deficit in half early in the second period. Junior defenseman Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, PA) sent a breakout pass to freshman forward Anthony DeGrazia (Novi, MI), who skated into the left slot before putting the puck on the stick of senior forward Anthony Cosmano (Wheaton, IL) where he found the back of the net from the right slot at 2:41 of the middle stanza. It was his third goal of the year to make it 2-1. Cosmano later looked to knot the game at two goals apiece when he and sophomore forward Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA) raced down the ice alone on the Panthers' power play, but Cosmano's shot was stoned by the Middlebury goalie to keep the lead.
The Panthers closed out the contest with three unanswered goals, all coming in the final seven minutes of the second stanza.
Freshman forward Chris Brown (Quincy, MA) blasted a shot from the point that sailed into the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign at the 13:46 mark and freshman defenseman Chris Steele (Revere, MA) followed just 31 seconds later with his third tally of the season on a helper from sophomore forward Nick Resor (Westwood, MA) and junior forward Ken Suchoski (Bear Creek Township, PA) at 14:17 for a 4-1 bulge. Middlebury capped the scoring when Knelman located Townsend for his second goal of the night and eighth of the year with 3:37 remaining in the second period for a 5-1 advantage.
Sophomore goalie Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 25 of 30 shots in the first two periods for the Beacons, before yielding to senior Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY), who turned away all eight shots on net in the final period. Sophomore goaltender John Yanchek (Hillsborough, NJ) earned the victory for the Panthers with 26 saves. Middlebury owned a 38-27 shot advantage for the game.
UMass Boston will be in action again tomorrow when it hosts nationally-ranked number six Williams College at 4:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Panthers travel to Babson Park, MA to play Babson College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
