MEN'S ICE HOCKEY FALLS IN SEASON OPENER TO BOWDOIN, 5-3
Nov. 20, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Graham Sisson (Chesterfield, MO) netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner to lead the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-3, this evening in the Eastern College Athletic Conference East/New England Small College Athletic Conference season opener at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Polar bears improve to 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Beacons fall to 0-1-0 and 0-1-0.
Bowdoin finished the first period in a flurry, netting three goals in the final 5:11 of the stanza, sparked by Sisson's first score of the night coming on helpers from junior defenseman Kyle Shearer-Hardy (Montreal, QUE) and senior blueliner Mike Corbelle (Byfield, MA) on the power play at the 14:49 mark. The Polar Bears wasted no time getting their second marker of the night when senior forward Ryan Blossom (Concord, MA) took the puck on a breakaway and scored just 14 seconds later for a 2-0 margin in the opening period. Shearer-Hardy found the back of the net for an unassisted goal of his own with just 61 seconds remaining in the period to give Bowdoin a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.
Sisson tallied his second marker of the night on the power play again when Shearer-Hardy and freshman forward Daniel Weiniger (Warren, NJ) hooked up with him at the 7:41 mark of the second period for a 4-0 Polar Bear lead. UMass Boston cut the deficit in half with a pair of five-on-three scores with the first coming when junior forwards Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) and Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) combined to find senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) at 11:38 of the second period. Sophomore forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) and junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) teamed to feed sophomore forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) just 30 seconds later to pull the Beacons to within 4-2 at 12:08 of the second session. UMB finished the night, 2-11 on the power play.
Bowdoin added a late goal to its total when UMass Boston pulled its goalie with a five-on-four advantage, but Blossom took advantage with an empty netter on a helper from senior forward Leland Fidler (Waltham, MA) with 1:29 to go in the game for a 5-2 lead. The Beacons responded 59 seconds later when freshman defenseman Ryan Crisculo (Trumbull, CT) picked up his first collegiate point with an assist to Jacona with just 30 ticks left in the contest to bring the home team to within 5-3, but that would be as close it would get.
Sophomore goalie Richard Nerland (Calgary, ALB) earned the victory for the Polar Bears with 28 saves on the night, while senior Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) made 29 stops for UMass Boston. Donovan also tied the school-record for career games played by a goalie, matching Tom Corliss' (1983-87) total of 73.
The Beacons will be in action again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. when they host Colby College at the Clark Athletic Center, while Bowdoin travels to Babson Park, MA to take on Babson College at 4:00 p.m.
