WATERVILLE, ME - Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) scored with 8:20 remaining in the game to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston past Colby College, 3-2, in men's hockey action on Saturday evening at Alfond Rink. UMass-Boston moves to 1-1 overall, while the Mules are 0-2 after dropping two one-goal games on opening weekend.
Spike Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, NJ) scored his second goal of the young season for the Mules off assists from Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, IL) and Tom McGinn (St. Albans, VT) at 6:24 of the first period to give the hosts the 1-0 advantage.
Power play goals helped the Beacons take a 2-1 lead. Andrew Burke (Southampton, Pa.) tallied with the extra man at 15:05 of the first period from Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) and Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA). Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) added the second power play goal at 5:55 of the second period from Tufman and Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, FL). UMB was 2-for-6 on the power play and held the Mules scoreless on their two opportunities.
Colby made it 2-2 after two periods when Cory McGrath (Yarmouthport, MA) scored with 4:23 to play in the period from Smigelski and Kondiles before Tufman's late game heroics sealed the win for the Beacons.
Thomas Speer (Wausau, WI) stopped 21 shots to earn the Beacon win, while Colby goalkeeper James Lemonias (Hingham, MA) had 16 of his 33 saves in the first period.
UMass Boston will be back in action on Wednesday, November 23 when they host Framingham State at 7:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center for their home-opener.
