MEN'S HOCKEY WINS SECOND STRAIGHT PAL/STOVEPIPE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 7-4 WIN OVER PENN STATE CLUB TEAM

HOOKSETT, NH - Junior forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) tallied four points on a goal and three assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team over the Penn State University club team, 7-4, to capture the Manchester Police Athletic League (PAL)/Stovepipe Tournament Championship for the second straight year in Hooksett, NH. Although, the Beacons took home the tournament trophy, the contest was considered an exhibition game because Penn State is a club team.

Sophomore forward Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA) broke into the scoring column for UMass Boston when sophomore defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) and sophomore forward Jimmy Ennis (Roslindale, MA) found him for the score just 2:16 into the game. The Nittany Lions came roaring back with a pair of unanswered goals to take a 2-1 edge at the 9:05 mark of the first period. Sophomore forward Chris Ceruitti (Export, PA) tied the score at 1-1 on the power play with helpers from junior forward Marek Polidor (Imperial, PA) and sophomore forward Paul Daley (Toms River, NJ) at 5:42 of the first period, before freshman defenseman Rich O'Brien (Furlong, PA) and freshman forward George Saad (Gibsonia, PA) set up junior forward Tim O'Brien (Bethel Park, PA) at the 9:05 mark.

The Beacons scored the next five goals to take a commanding 6-2 advantage late in the second period. Junior blueliner Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) knotted the game at 2-2 with a power play goal coming with 3:47 left in the first period on an assist from Sands and Tufman. UMass Boston took the lead for good just 17 ticks into the second stanza when senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) and Tufman combined to find junior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) to make it 3-2. Ennis buried a short-handed tally for the Beacons at the 5:58 mark, before Tufman and Atsoff combined to feed Kranzky on the power play for the eventual game-winner at 12:12 of the middle period. Tufman netted a goal of his own to give UMass Boston the four-goal margin when Kranzky and freshman defenseman Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, FL) assisted at the 15:34 mark.

Penn State answered with two unanswered scores with the first coming at 17:22 of the second period on a score by Tim O'Brien on an assist from freshman forward Dominic Morrone (Sewell, NJ) and senior blue liner Steve Thurston (Wallingford, CT). Polidor cut the deficit to 6-4 when sophomore defenseman Dan Loucks (Collegeville PA) and senior forward Ryan Paradis (Rochester, NH) found him for the power score at 4:04 of the third period. The Beacons got a goal back at 9:09 of the final period to cap the scoring when sophomore forward Jeff Van Siclen (Alamo, CA) and Calhoun fed freshman defenseman Steven Weston (Henniker, NH) for a marker.

Senior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) earned the win for UMass Boston with 30 saves, while junior goaltender Teddy Hume (Austin, TX) stopped 16 of 22 shots in 35:34 of action for the Nittany Lions. Junior John Jay (Dedham, MA) played in 23:41 in relief and turned away 10 of 11 shots.

The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, December 4 when they travel to Hartford, CT to take on Trinity College (CT) at 7:00 p.m., while Penn State hosts University of Delaware on December at 9:00 p.m.
