BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) potted a pair of goals and added an assist to help the University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team defeat Wesleyan University, 6-4, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision, the Beacons improve their record to 5-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the ECAC East, while the Cardinals fall to 2-3-1 and 1-3-0.
Atsoff batted in an airborne centering pass from senior forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) which gave the Beacons a 1-0 lead at 8:40 of the first period. He scored his second goal of the contest and fifth of the season at 7:01 of the second period when he blocked a shot in the defensive zone and then raced alone down the ice on a breakaway.
Despite trailing 4-2, Wesleyan refused to go quietly and notched two goals in the third period to tie the score before UMass Boston went back on top. Cardinals senior forward Anthony DePietto (Westbury, NY) hammered in a shot directly off the faceoff for an unassisted tally at 2:15. Then junior forward Geoff Mucha (West Chester, PA) fired a slap shot into the back of the net with an assist to junior forward Brett Bandazian (Wyckoff, NJ) at 13:31 to tie the contest, 4-4. The Beacons recaptured the lead for good at 3:52 remaining on a wrist shot from Tufman. Atsoff and freshman forward Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, NJ) cycled the puck beautifully to setup the game-winner. Junior forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) added an empty-netter, his second goal of the game, just over a minute later to seal the victory.
After Atsoff gave UMass Boston the early lead, the Cardinals knotted it up 1-1 at 13:59 of the first when freshman forward Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, MA) one-timed a pass from freshman forward Tommy Hartnett (Bronxville, NY). UMass Boston jumped back on top just 53 seconds later. Fitti knocked home his own rebound after junior forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and junior forward Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA) were denied at the doorstep. Tasiopoulos tallied his third goal of the season and second of the period at 17:01 to tie the game again, 2-2. He collected a pass from Hartnett on an odd-man rush and ripped a wrist shot top shelf.
The Beacons extended their lead, 4-2, on an unassisted score by senior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) at 15:44 of the second period.
UMass Boston junior goalie Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) earned his third victory of the year with 29 saves. Sophomore goaltender Glenn Stowell (Hadley, MA) had 31 stops for Wesleyan.
The Beacons return to action Wednesday, December 8 when they travel to Babson College for a 7:00 p.m. matchup, while the Cardinals are off for a month and will take on Amherst College on Sunday, January 2 as part of the McCabe Tournament.
